While Deacon Dever usually sets his sights on the finish line of a race in cross country or track and field, the Dawson Springs High School junior is doing the same thing with his academic career.

In addition to running, Deacon plays basketball while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

Over the summer, he participated in the Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs.

“It was a really good experience. We went up there, and we created a company and presented it to a bunch of judges and investors in front of 300 people,” he said.

The company was Camp Life Skills, a summer camp where teens would attend and learn everything from how to repair a car to filling out tax forms.

“Everything you need to be an adult,” Deacon said.

Work ethic is a life skill that Deacon already comes equipped with. He’s taking dual credit classes as he readies for college and seeks a degree in accounting or financial advisement.

In addition to athletics, Deacon is a member of the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, National Beta Club, and National Honor Society as well as the school’s Gifted and Talented program.

He is active at the Grapevine Baptist Church and has done countless volunteer work for programs in Hopkins County.

In the spring, he was part of the Dawson Springs 3200-meter relay team that medaled at the Class 1A State Meet.

This fall, Deacon and his cross country teammates are running for a sixth straight region championship trophy – something never accomplished at the school.

After a 10th-place finish at the Christian County Season Opener last month, Deacon is hoping to get his time under 17 minutes and eventually run track or cross country in college.
