South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers knows his first collegiate start in last week’s 23-19 win over Old Dominion left a lot of doubts going into Saturday afternoon’s Southeastern Conference opener at Kentucky.
“It wasn’t the best. I kind of played timid, kind of nervous, scared to make a mistake. I just have to go out there and play, just be myself,” Sellers said about his play against Old Dominion.
Sellers completed only 10 of 23 passes for 114 yards against Old Dominion and had just two pass completions of 15 or more yards. Sellers did have 22 runs for 68 yards and a touchdown and admitted after the game he might not have prepared the right way for his first start. He stressed the need to be both more patient and confident.
Kentucky’s defense figures to be far better than the one he faced against Old Dominion. He knows that but believes having started one game will help him against the Cats.
“I think it was just a first game thing, first game starting,” Sellers said. “You know, 80,000 people. I got the first game out of the way. I think I’ll be good from now on.”
Sellers understands Kentucky could load up to stop the run and make him throw.
“Really just throwing extra, any chance we get,” Sellers said about building confidence with his receivers. “Live reps against a defense is the best thing you can do.”
