Blazers Wade Their Way Past Mayfield into All A Quarterfinals

The University Heights Academy Blazers are headed off to the quarterfinals of the All A Classic boys’ state soccer tournament. The Blazers move on following a 2-1 sectional round win Saturday night on the road in Mayfield in what could be kindly termed soggy conditions.

The match splashed its way to a 0-0 tie until just over three minutes were left in the opening half when Griffin McCoy scored to put the Blazers in front 1-0.

McCoy scored again with just under 29 minutes left in the match. This time, Cal Givens found him with the through ball and McCoy found the net and the Blazers had a 2-0 lead.

Mayfield made a late move to get back in the match as the Cardinals scored during a scramble in the box with 10:57 left to make it a 2-1 UHA lead.

But the Cardinals would not pull off the rally, as the Blazers were able to close the door over the final minutes of the match and pick up the sectional win.

Eli Finch had a big night in goal for the Blazers, ending up with six saves.

The win puts the Blazers in the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2019. That year, UHA reached the semifinals before being knocked out by
Louisville Collegiate.

The Blazers will face either Menifee County or the 15th Region champion in the quarterfinals next Saturday at Louisville Collegiate.
