
The Christian County volleyball team capped a perfect swing through 8th-District competition with a 3-1 victory over hosts UHA on Tuesday, ending a 10-game losing streak in the series with the Lady Blazers.
However, it looked like business as usual for UHA in the first set. The Lady Blazers broke a 9-9 tie with an 8-2 run capped by an Olivia Oakley kill to open up a 17-11 advantage. Christian County battled back to get as close as 19-17 after an ace by Skylar Kirby, but UHA took the opener 25-21.
University Heights maintained the momentum to start the second set, taking a 9-3 lead after a kill by Kiley Lambert. But this time the Lady Colonels had the answer with a 10-3 spurt to lead 13-12.
Christian County stretched the advantage to 21-14 to force a UHA timeout after a Kaidence Atwell kill, and Atwell closed out a 25-15 win with an emphatic point at the net.
Four points were the most that separated the teams throughout the third set, starting with an early 7-3 margin for the Lady Blazers. The Lady Colonels opened up a 20-17 lead and held on to win 25-23 for a 2-1 advantage.
Christian County led for much of the final set until the Lady Blazers broke an 18-18 tie to take a two-point edge. Kirby scored through a block to knot the set at 20-20, and the Lady Colonels got a pair of aces from Shiloh Baker to close the match on a 5-0 run.
Oakley led UHA with 19 kills and 19 digs, and Gretchen Durham finished with 27 assists and eight digs. Katherine Wood had 12 digs, and Lambert added six kills.
Christian County improved to 5-10, 4-0 in district play, ahead of a rematch between the teams on Tuesday.
UHA slipped to 4-9 and saw its district record drop to 2-2.
