Jake Witherspoon qualified for the KHSAA state first round following an 11th-place finish at the Region 2 Golf Tournament in Owensboro and helped Madisonville to a seventh-place team finish.

Witherspoon shot a 39 on each side of the course and was one of the ten individual qualifiers for next week’s state first round at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club.

Owensboro’s Jax Malone won the region title with a 2-under par 70, one shot ahead of Daviess County’s Grant Broughton. Hopkinsville’s Wade Foster was third with an even-par 72.

Tyler Bryan shot a round of 82 to finish tied for 20th place. He missed qualifying for state by two shots.

Michael Terry stepped into a scoring opportunity for the Maroons and responded with a round of 85, good for 36th place. Terry replaced the injured Treyson Raymer who suffered an injury a couple of weeks ago.

Max Clayton and Brennen Cole each shot an 88 to finish tied for 51st place.

As a team, Madisonville shot a 333 to finish in seventh place, two shots behind Henderson County and three shots behind fifth place Hancock County.

The tourney in Owensboro was suspended on Monday after a pair of two-hour delays. The Maroon golfers were in the last group to begin play and got in just a handful of holes when the horn sounded at 6:30 to stop play. They returned on Tuesday to finish their rounds.
