James Garnett found the back of the net with just over five minutes to play on Tuesday to break a 1-1 deadlock with visiting Muhlenberg County and help the Trigg County boys’ soccer team earn its fifth win in nine matches.
The Wildcats were on the front foot throughout the opening 40 minutes but couldn’t find the opening goal, going into the halftime break with a scoreless tie.
However, it only took eight minutes for Matt Choate to give the Wildcats the lead in the second half on a strike off an assist from Nate Kelly.
Muhlenberg wrestled away the momentum over the next 20 minutes and made the pressure pay off with the equalizing goal with 12 minutes left.
Facing the prospect of a second-straight draw and fifth this season, Trigg County nosed in front on Garnett’s goal off a pass from Kelly to secure the narrow victory.
Goalkeeper Cam McCormick finished with 12 saves for the Wildcats, including some big stops in the final minutes.
Trigg County improved 5-7-4 ahead of the regular-season finale on Thursday at Todd County Central. The Rebels won the last meeting between the teams 3-0 in 2022.
