It was a night when Alice Smith became the career scoring leader for Lyon County girls’ soccer, but Eden Jones nearly stole the show.
The sophomore scored four times, including a natural hat trick to begin the game, to help the Lady Lyons beat Mayfield 10-2 on Tuesday at Lee S. Jones Park.
With Mayfield packing six players at midfield to counter Smith, it was Jones who was able to attack the left side and scored three times in the first 19 minutes to stake the Lady Lyons to a 3-0 lead.
“I don’t think anyone was expecting that,” Lady Lyon coach Abby Smith said, “but I was expecting it. We’ve been trying to get her to shoot more. I’m so proud of her. She just soaks up everything that I coach her with.”
Meanwhile, Alice Smith entered Tuesday’s match tied with her older sister Rose with 138 goals – the most in school history. Midway through the half, Alice took a through ball from Anna White and beat the Mayfield goalie with a left foot for her record-breaking goal.
It was the first of three goals for the senior, who now has 33 goals this year. It was also a proud moment for Abby, who wears the hats of coach and mother to Alice and Rose.
“All of them are my girls. It’s not just those two daughters, but I love them all. But yes, it does feel great to see it,” Abby/mom/coach said.
Alice not only passed her sister for Lyon’s career scoring lead, but she also moved into second place in 5th District scoring history. With at least two games left, she needs just five goals to pass Trigg County’s Lania Hite for the most goals by a district player.
In addition to her two assists, White chipped in with a pair of goals including the final goal with 4:38 that triggered the mercy rule.
Lyla Melton had a goal, and Gracelynn Taylor added an assist for the Lady Lyons, who suffered a 6-3 loss at Mayfield (5-12-1) on Sept. 16.
“We started off with more energy tonight and we were better prepared,” the Lyon County coach said. “They are a much better program, and I have to give credit to their coach.”
Lyon County (8-7) will close the regular season at home Thursday against Hopkins County Central. The Lady Lyons will play Crittenden County on Monday in the 5th District semifinals at Trigg County.
