Wade Foster got off to a great start at Wednesday’s KHSAA State Golf First Round but could not maintain the momentum on the back nine and missed advancing to the championship round by three shots.
The Hopkinsville senior was playing his best golf the season after a third-place finish at the region tournament last week and began his round at the Hopkinsville Golf and Country Club at 1-under par after six holes thanks to birdies on No. 2 and No. 4.
Foster finished the front nine with two bogeys and a double bogey to go out with a 38.
On the back nine, Foster managed just three pars and came in with a 45. His round of 83 tied him for 38th place.
Golfers at state first round need to finish in the top 15 so long as they are not on the three teams with the lowest scores in order to advance to the two-day championship round.
McCracken County’s Landon Hunt and Greenwood’s Layton Richey tied for the lead with even par 71s while McCracken County, Owensboro, and Taylor County will advance to the championship round next week.
