The Christian County Colonels will be more than happy to see Deuce Bailey graduate from Bowling Green High School this spring, as will most other teams that have to face the Purples on the football field. For the second year in a row, Bailey threw for four touchdowns for the second year in a row against Christian County as the Purples rolled to a 49-14 win Thursday night at the Stadium of Champions.
Bailey ended his night at halftime as the Purples took a 42-6 lead into the break and had brought the running clock into play midway through the second quarter.
When Bailey finished his night he was 8 of 11 through the air, with one interception for 248 yards and four touchdowns.
Bailey was firing coming out to start the game. The Purples took the opening kickoff and then scored four plays later on a four yard run from Nick Graham to take a 7-0 lead just 86 seconds into the game.
The Colonels picked up one first down on their opening possession before having to punt the ball away, and then it was back to work for Bailey and company.
On the second play of the possession, Bailey found Ethan Kirkwood for a 44 yard touchdown pass and the Purples were up 14-0 with still 7:07 to go in the first. And, it was about to go from bad to worse for the Colonels.
Two plays after the kickoff, Jaiden Wiliams’ pass to the flat was intercepted by Bowling Green’s Brandon Gurley, who returned it 14 yards untouched to the end zone to extend the Bowling Green lead to 21-0 with 6:26 left to go in the first quarter.
After the Colonels went four plays and turned it over on downs, the Purples took over on the Christian County 44 yard line. Just two plays later, Bailey struck again, this time on a 37 yard touchdown pass to Jaxen Smith, and the Bowling Green lead moved out to 28-0 and there was still 4:38 to go in the first quarter.
At this point, Bailey was 6 of 6 for 153 yards and two touchdowns.
Christian County got something going on offense on the next possession as the Colonels went on a 13 play drive. However, the drive came to an abrupt end when Bowling Green’s Andru Jones picked off a Jaiden Williams pass giving the Purples the ball back at their own 34.
However, the Purples gave the ball right back on the next play as Christian County’s Kemarion Ford picked off a Deuce Bailey pass, setting the Colonels up at the Bowling Green 22. The Colonels were not able to take advantage of the turnover and turned the ball over on downs at the Purples 13 yard line.
The Purples did not waste their opportunity. On the very next play, Deuce Bailey hit Trevy Barber for an 87 yard touchdown, giving the Purples a 35-0 lead with 9:14 to go in the half.
Christian County had its best series of the night on the ensuing possession. The Colonels took over on their own 26 and went 74 yards for the score. Jaiden Williams connected with Josh Bridges on a 46 yard score to cut the lead to 35-6.
Bowling Greed would strike paydirt one more time in the first half. This time it was Deuce Bailey hitting Trevy Barber again for an 8 yard score as the Purples took a 42-6 lead into the break.
That would be the last action for the Bowling Green starters. Christian County’s starters would stay in a little bit longer and put a touchdown on the board when Williams hit Bridges for a 55 yard touchdown pass.
Bowling Green reserves would add a second half touchdown after the Colonels turned the ball over on an interception with 2:45 to go in the third.
One of the highlights of the night was the play of Jaiden Williams against the Bowling Green defense. When he left the game, Williams was 14 of 25 for 282 yards and two touchdowns, both to Josh Bridges, who also had a good night for the Colonels.
The loss drops the Colonels to 0-6 for the season. Christian County hits the road next week to take on the Daviess County Panthers.
Bowling Green has now won six straight and is 6-1. The Purples are off before getting ready with their annual crosstown battle with South Warren.
