After losing a shootout to Mayfield in last season’s Class 2A championship game, the Owensboro Catholic Aces looked like a team on a mission Friday night. The Aces got 342 yards passing and 5 touchdowns from starting quarterback Brady Atwell, in less than a half, as Owensboro Catholic steamrolled the Todd County Central Rebels 61-6 at Steele Stadium in Owensboro.

Atwell was 14 of 17 through the air as he put up video game like number in the first 16 minutes of the game in an offense that looked like a well-oiled machine.

Over the last three games against Todd County Central, Crittenden County, and Henderson County, the Aces (7-0) have put up 140 points while giving up just 8 points.

It did not take the Aces long to find the end zone Friday night. After taking the opening kickoff, Catholic scored just a minute and eleven seconds into the game on a 10 yard pass from Atwell to Xavier Maddox to make it 7-0.

The highlight of the night came moments later for the Rebels. With a 1st and 15 from their own 10 yard line, the Rebels called a reverse, throwback pass that ended up in the hands of B.J. Farlow, who got behind the Aces’ secondary and rambled to the end zone for a 90 yard score to cut the lead to 7-6.

But any thoughts of a big upset on this night were quickly put to bed by Brady Atwell and his crew. Owensboro Catholic scored on a 19 yard pass from Atwell to Hudson Ebelhar to make it 14-6 with 8:59 still left in the first.

After a Rebel drive stalled out, the Aces were back to work. In a one-play drive, Atwell hit Miles Edge for a 68 yard score to extend the lead to 21-6 with 2:31 left in the first. A quick three and out for the Rebels set up the Aces again late in the quarter. It was Atwell once again, this time to Dereon Crowe for a 17 yard score and the lead was 28-6 with 57 seconds left in the first.

The Rebels had to punt again on the first play of the second quarter, giving the Aces the ball at their own 27. A long 64 yard pass from Atwell set the stage for a one yard run from Cameron Woodward, putting O-Cath up 35-6 early in the second.

Another three and out, and the Aces had the ball back again. Three plays later, Atwell hit Miles Edge on a one-yard pass to blow the lead out to 42-6 with 8:03 left in the half and start the running clock for the rest of the night. It also ended the night for Atwell and many of his fellow starters for the Aces as the reserves would finish out the night.

Backup quarterback Dremall Carothers came into the game for the Aces midway through the second and would throw three touchdown passes of his own.

For the night, Owensboro Catholic had 548 yards passing and 61 yards rushing.

Todd County Central could never get any kind of ground game going as the Rebels rushed for -28 yards on the night. Starting QB Braylon Elderbrook was 6 of 10 through the air for 71 yards. Eli Morgan was 1 of 1 for 90 yards and a touchdown.

Todd County Central falls to 2-5 with its third straight loss. The Rebels have a big district game at home on Thursday, October 18 as they host the Fort Campbell Falcons.
