Fort Campbell took a big first step toward a home field playoff game Friday night. The Falcons got big plays from Eric Greene and Torrance Dixon as they outscored the Edmonson County Wildcats 36-31 in Brownsville.
The win puts the Falcons at 1-0 in district play and means a win over either Owensboro Catholic or Todd County Central would likely have them at home the opening week of the Class 2A playoffs.
The game was back and forth from the opening kickoff. Edmonson County took the early lead on an 8 yard run from Carter Swihart with 1:39 to go in the first that made it 7-0.
Fort Campbell tied the game at 7-7 on a 2 yard run from J.P. Perryman early in the second quarter. The Wildcats took the lead back with 3:57 to go in the first half on a 9 yard run from Colton White.
That lead for the Wildcats was short-lived as Eric Greene returned the kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. J.P. Perryman scored on the two-point conversion to give the Falcons a 15-14 lead at the half.
Greene scored his second touchdown of the night with 10:56 to go in the third quarter when he caught a 14 yard pass from J.P. Perryman, pushing the Falcon lead to 22-14.
Edmonson County’s Carter Swihart scored his second touchdown of the night on a 9 yard run with 3:28 left in the third to cut the lead to 22-21.
Edmonson County took the lead on a 42 yard field goal from Colton White with 10:27 left in the game.
The Falcons moved back into the lead on Eric Greene’s third touchdown of the night, a 42 yard pass from J.P. Perryman that made it 29-24 with 6:0 left. Fort Campbell finally got a little breathing room when Torrance Dixon came up with an interception and ran it back 48 yards for the score with 3:09 left, moving the Falcon lead out to 36-24.
Edmonson County’s Garrett Lyons scored from five yards out with 32 seconds left but it was too little, too late as Fort Campbell headed back out of town with the win.
The numbers from the game are a bit misleading. The Wildcats had more first downs, 18 to 6; more yardage, 326 to 178; but still ended up losing the game.
J.P. Perryman was 6 of 10 through the air for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Eric Greene caught three of the passes for 59 yards and two scores.
Perryman was the Falcons’ leading rusher with 10 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown.
With the win, which was Fort Campbell’s 3rd straight, the Falcons improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in district play. Fort Campbell is now off until October 17 when they host Todd County Central.
