Trigg County watched for the second straight week as an opposing player set a school record against them.
Union County senior Jarren Johnson ran for 259 yards and six touchdowns to lead the Braves to a 64-22 win over the Wildcats in Morganfield.
Johnson’s sixth touchdown came on a 57-yard run with 5:00 left in the third quarter, giving the Braves a 57-7 lead. His 3,785 career yards moved him past Dr. Tim Joiner’s mark of 3,741 yards. Last week, Johnson moved past his uncle Jabbar Frazier who ran for 3,568 yards.
Corithian Seales-Portee ran for 3,958 yards for Union County but was given a fifth year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Johnson should pass the former Braves standout in the coming weeks.
On Friday, Trigg County fumbled the opening kickoff and Union County opened the floodgates quickly. The Braves scored three touchdowns on its first 10 plays from scrimmage. Johnson had scoring runs of 10 and 21 yards, and Abe Fletcher added a 41-yard run for a 21-0 Union advantage with 3:44 left in the opening quarter.
After punts on its first two drives, the Wildcats used a 9-play, 70-yard drive to get on the scoreboard. Davaree Gude scored on an 11-yard run to cut the deficit to 21-7.
However, like in the previous week when Hancock County broke open the game with 42 unanswered points, Union County did the same with 36 straight. Johnson added two more scoring runs sandwiched around a 3-yard run by Amare Black. Johnson’s second scoring run came with 37 seconds left in the half. The 2-point conversion put Union up 43-7 and triggered the running clock.
Trigg County added a pair of scores in the final 6:25 against mostly Union County reserves. Joshuan Bridges scored on an 8-yard run and Peyton Williams added the 2-point conversion on a catch.
After Union County took to the air to score its ninth touchdown of the game with 3:13 left, Trigg closed out the scoring when Caden Scott hit freshman Zamarrion Broussard for a 58-yard scoring strike.
Scott finished 9-of-17 passing for 119 yards and a touchdown. He was picked off once which Union County returned for a touchdown but saw called back due to a penalty. It was one of three scores called back on a flag. Trigg County had a long touchdown run by Gude and a 90-yard kickoff return by Deontae Edison nullified due to penalty flags. The teams combined were flagged 19 times for 195 yards.
Union County rolled up 426 yards of offense with 327 coming on the ground. Fletcher, who saw his carries increase with starter Willem McPeake out with an injured foot, added 60 yards rushing. Johnson’s 259 yards came on just 12 carries.
In three career games against Trigg County, the speedy Johnson has run for 515 yards on 34 carries with nine touchdowns.
Johnson’s school record comes a week after Hancock County quarterback Dylan Morris threw for 398 yards in the Hornets’ win over the Wildcats. Morris broke his record Thursday night with 413 yards in a 59-0 win over Webster County.
Trigg County had 251 yards of offense but wasn’t helped with three turnovers. Gude ran for 67 yards on 15 carries as he closes in on a second straight 1,000-yard season.
Union County joins Hancock County with 3-0 district records. Every district team has a bye next week. Union and Hancock will play on Thursday, Oct. 17 for the regular season district championship and number one seed in the playoffs.
Trigg County drops to 1-2 in the district along with McLean County and Hopkins County Central – both who are on the Wildcats’ remaining schedule.
If Trigg wins both games, they can secure a three-seed in the playoffs. A split means a likely four seed so long as there are no ties, which would be broken by the KHSAA RPI. Two losses by the Wildcats would mean they miss the postseason for a second straight year.
Trigg County travels to Hopkins County Central on Oct. 18.
