Mayfield scored three touchdowns in less than a minute Friday night while overwhelming Caldwell County 47-14 in Class 2A 1st District football action.
The Cardinals totaled 465 yards of offense — 352 in the first half — while winning at War Memorial Stadium in Mayfield.
The Tigers, though, appeared prepared to make a game of it against the defending state champions, but Mayfield’s rapid-fire strikes turned a competitive 7-0 ballgame into a 28-0 Cardinal lead.
Caldwell (2-5 overall, 0-1 district) moved the ball on the opening drive of the night but came up empty on a missed 30-yard field goal
Mayfield (4-2, 1-0) then scored on a 43-yard strike from Gray Robbins to Mak Hoover to go up 7-0 with 2:43 left in the first quarter.
After a Caldwell three-and-out, Mayfield drove 83 yards and got into the end zone on a 1-yard run by Ian Williams.
That came with 12 seconds left in the opening stanza.
A Caldwell interception led to a 24-yard scoring toss from Robbins to Ashton Flint, extending the margin to 21-0 at the 11:44 mark of the second period.
Another pick gave Mayfield the ball at the Caldwell 25. Two plays later, Josiah England scored on a 3-yard run to make it 28-0 and give the Cardinals firm control of the contest with still 11:14 seconds in the first half.

Mayfield added a 2-yard TD run from Ja’Aubrey Sherrill with only 29 seconds left in the half. However, the PAT was blocked by Eli Stevens, leaving the Cardinal advantage at 34-0.
Caldwell then came up with a big play just before the break when Luke Maddox returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a score. But Mayfield still took a 34-7 lead to the locker room.
The Cardinals finished off their win with a pair of third-quarter touchdown runs. England had a 6-yard scoring carry just 19 seconds into the third period. He then added a 44-yard TD run with 3:08 left in the quarter to make it 47-7.
Caldwell’s last score came on an 18-yard run by Bryan Barbour with 3:39 remaining in the contest.
England ran for 156 yards and the three TDs for Mayfield.
Robbins was 10 of 15 passing for 236 yards and two scores.
Hoover caught four passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.
Caldwell quarterback Daelyn Lander was 15 of 28 passing for 148 yards but was intercepted three times.
Maddox caught five passes for 76 yards.
Caldwell had 235 total yards.

Mayfield had 19 first downs while the Tigers had 16.
The Caldwell offense made five trips into the red zone, but the only points of the night came on the late TD run by Barbour.
Play was not only chippy most of the night, but the postgame handshake line had to be stopped after an altercation among players also led to some fans coming onto the field.
The Tigers will take next week off before hosting Murray for another district date on Oct. 18.
Murray (6-1, 1-0) defeated Crittenden County 37-27 in district action Friday night.
