The Trigg County Lady Wildcats were able to accomplish what only three other teams had pulled off this season – hold Lyon County without a goal.

Trigg’s defense was stout and limited the Lady Lyons to only two shots in a 5-0 victory in the 5th District championship on Monday.

The district title is Trigg’s third straight – a program first. Caldwell County was the last district team to win three straight titles – claiming five straight from 2008-2011. Lyon County won four straight from 2003-06.

The path for Trigg’s title was cleared early with two goals in the first eight minutes of the match. Leiah Hite had a hand in four of Trigg’s five goals.

She launched a corner kick four minutes in that Hallie Joiner headed home for the quick 1-0 lead. For the senior, it was her 21st goal of the campaign.

Three minutes later, Hite took a feed from Maggie Wolfe and punched home the kick into the right corner for her 36th goal of the season.

Midway through the first half, Lyon County was unable to clear the ball, and Joiner came up with a steal. She then fed Hite who used her left foot to knock home Trigg’s third goal of the contest.

Trigg added its fourth goal of the half thanks to some miscommunication in the Lyon County end. Laci Spaulding sent a backward pass that rolled past two defenders and into the net for her third goal of the season.

The only goal of the second half came when Leiah Hite’s left-footed cross found Landie Hite in front of the goal, which the freshman redirected into the goal.

Trigg’s priority was to limit the chances for Lyon County’s Alice Smith. The Lady Lyon senior scored four times in Monday’s semifinal win over Crittenden County to push her season total to 33.

Trigg’s back four of Lydia Redd, Braylyn Harper, Payton Southwood, and Brooke Humphries did a good job collapsing the middle and taking away the through balls that Lyon County thrives on.

Trigg outshot Lyon 19-2 and limited the Lady Lyons to only two corner kicks.

The win was Trigg’s eighth straight over Lyon County, and it improved their record to 35-18 all-time against the Lady Lyons.

Both teams will move into next week’s region tournament that begins Monday at Madisonville. Defending region champion Henderson County blanked Union County 8-0 for the 6th District title on Tuesday, while Madisonville edged Hopkins County Central 3-2 for the 7th District championship.

University Heights Academy and Hopkinsville meet for the 8th District title on Wednesday night at UHA.

Region pairings are expected to be announced on Friday.
