One big surprise at Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness was guard Lamont Butler performing one of his new rap songs for the Rupp Arena fans. However, it was not Butler’s idea to do what he did.

Instead, Butler said at SEC Media Day on Tuesday that it was coach Mark Pope’s idea for him to do the song.

“He actually convinced me,” Butler said. “I didn’t want to do it because I felt like it was doing too much. But he’s the one that actually convinced me to go out there and perform in Big Blue.  I’m glad it happened. It was fun.”

Butler said he’s had a lot of positive feedback on the song and his performance.

“Rapping is just something I do for fun. Me and my guys back in San Diego State, we started doing it. So it was cool to have it actually out and then do it for Big Blue. But this is all for fun,” he said.

If he’s as creative a player as he is a songwriter, Big Blue fans are really going to enjoy him. He managed to reference all his UK teammates in the song.

“I wanted to show off my teammates, talking about them for the most part,” Butler said. “And then just for Big Blue. I mean, we got a whole new team, so for everybody we mentioned and shown, I think it just gives them a resonance with everybody. So that’s why I did it.”

Teammate Jaxson Robinson revealed that Butler only needed a few days to put together the song and he has a lot of other songs ready to post.

  1. I love this teams chemistry. Nobody is talking about mock drafts. It lets the team have there own identity. Thank God for us not being a farm team anymore. We will still have guys go to the NBA every year. Difference is that is not our main goal. Our main goals should always be to win championships.
