In search of the program’s first 8th-District title in almost a decade, the Christian County volleyball team pulled away from Fort Campbell 3-0 on Tuesday to advance to a championship matchup with Heritage Christian Academy.
The Lady Colonels overcame a somewhat uninspired start to steadily dominate the Lady Falcons, culminating in a 25-3 victory in the third set.
In the opening set, Skylar Kirby broke a 10-10 tie with a block and an ace to jumpstart a 12-3 run and build a 10-point lead on the way to a 25-18 win.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Christian County turning an 11-10 advantage into a commanding 23-12 lead. Kirby closed the set with a kill and an ace for a 25-15 victory to put the Lady Colonels on the verge of a fifth-straight championship match appearance.
Any hope of a Fort Campbell comeback evaporated early in the final set as the Lady Colonels capped a 7-0 spurt with an ace from Ashlea Russell to force a Lady Falcon timeout.
The break did nothing to slow down the Lady Colonels, and they forced another Fort Campbell timeout after two more aces by Russell stretched the lead to 15-0.
Leading 18-3, Christian County closed with seven straight points, including a pair of kills by Kaidence Atwell, to seal the victory.
The Lady Colonels snapped a two-game skid to improve to 12-17 and set up a third match with Heritage Christian. The teams split the regular-season meetings, with Christian County taking the first 3-1 and the Lady Warriors answering with a shutout win in the second.
