Kentucky junior Otega Oweh had a lot of coaches pursuing him when he decided to leave Oklahoma but no one recruited him harder than UK’s Mark Pope.

He said Pope really has not changed a lot from the person who was recruiting him now that he’s coaching him.

“I would just say how good of a person he was recruiting me and has kept being that way,” said Oweh. “A lot of times when coaches are recruiting you, they’re always nice to you. They’re always doing these things.

“But it hasn’t changed not one bit since I got here and he started coaching me. He interacts with us, he keeps a relationship. It’s not always about basketball. It’s talk about people.”

Oweh said Pope is very inquisitive about things a lot of other coaches are not.

“He will talk to you about your day, what’s going on with you in your household.  Do you have a pet? He makes sure he checks up on that pet too. It’s real, real genuine with him all the time.”

  1. Pope is a healthy change from Calabunga. Everything isn’t about just the NBA. He actually cares about a person and there emotional well being. That is a big part of being a coach. Oweh is going to be very good the next 2 years here. I think he’s 3rd or 4th on the team in scoring this year. Then his senior year I think he’s all SEC. He’s going to be the best guard we have at getting baskets and not just 3s. His game is well rounded and he’s also one of the best defenders on the team. You can put Butler on any point guard and you can put Oweh on any 2 or 3 in the country and they will struggle to score. I would put Oweh on Cooper Flagg. Even tho Cooper is 4 inches taller Oweh is kuch stronger and faster. I think he could shut Cooper down. We will see. I don’t know anybody else on Kentucky that would guard him besides maybe Robinson.

  2. It’s going to be a good team because IMO Afari Williams is our best passer.

Andrew Carr is going to score a ton of points.

  3. Coach Pope hasn’t taken a misstep yet, everything he’s done or said has been right on, although I don’t know about this idea of bringing back the denim uniforms-haha.
