It is something that has not happened to the Lyon County Lyons very many times over the past few years. In fact, for the past few seasons, it was the Lyons who were the team dishing out a huge run to put away an opponent. Saturday, Lyon County was on the receiving end of one of those runs during their scrimmage against Male at the CFSB Center.

Trailing 30-22 midway through the second quarter, the Bulldogs used a 23-2 run to go from 30-22 behind to up 45-32 as they rolled to a 64-40 win over the defending state champs.

Both teams came out firing in this one. Lyon County held a 23-17 lead after the first quarter. The lead reached 8 points at 30-22 and then the bottom fell out for the Lyons. Whether it was a bit of fatigue, as it was the Lyons’ second scrimmage and Male’s first, or the Bulldogs’ pressure defense, or a combination of both, things quickly went south for the Lyons.

Male came storming back to score the final 14 points of the half to go up 36-30. The Bulldogs then scored 9 in a row after a Lyon County basket to open the second half to take a 45-32 lead. The lead was 49-36 after the third quarter.

The Male defense allowed the Lyons just four points in the final quarter as the Bulldogs pulled away to the 24-point win.

The Lyons again got big games from Bray Kirk and Isaac Defew in the loss.
