A lifestyle change usually pays off for adults when they feel their health isn’t where it should be. The same applies to athletes.
For Evelyn Bangart, her changes have been glaring as she competes in three sports for Hopkinsville High School.
“I have been working in trying to be more prepared by doing CrossFit and changing my diet to help me get in better shape,” she said.
The first change for the sophomore came in cross country where she knocked three minutes off her best time from last year. Her personal best time of 22:42 over the 3.1-mile course at Graves County was nearly five minutes better than her first time of the season – the equivalent of running 9:13 mile times in the opener to 7:34 mile times in October.
Evelyn has moved from the cross country course to the swimming pool where her times at the season-opening Rick Cohn Invitational were better than a year ago. She knocked six seconds off her time in the 100-yard freestyle and saw nearly a full-second improvement in the 50-yard sprint.
After a short break after swim season ends, Evelyn will compete for the Hopkinsville tennis team – the sport that sparked her self-improvement last year.
Evelyn feels like each sport has a quality that helps her be better at the others.
“I think swimming definitely helps me with endurance because I don’t do track and field. Tennis helps me stay positive and helps with the sprints.”
She talks about her changes in this video interview.
