Caldwell County has had only two head coaches in the entire 24-year history of its volleyball program.

Next year that number grows to three.

Daniel Cortner announced during the team’s postseason awards ceremony Monday night in the CCHS cafeteria that he was retiring from the Lady Tigers’ head coaching position.

Afterward, Cortner talked about his decision to step away from the program….

Sue Stone led the Caldwell program for the first 14 years, compiling a 350-135-2 mark.

Cortner, who spent five years under Stone as an assistant, took over the head coaching reins in 2015 and went 213-128 in 10 seasons.

Cortner guided the Lady Tigers to the 2nd Region championship in 2020. Caldwell hosted a state first round match that season but fell to McCracken County.

Caldwell won eight 7th District championships under Cortner and also claimed seven All A Classic regional titles.

Cortner was selected 2nd Region Coach of the Year by the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association in 2016, 2019 and 2020.

The Lady Tigers were 19-10 this past season, winning the 7th District championship.

Caldwell defeated Henderson County in the first round of the 2nd Region tournament before falling to eventual champion Heritage Christian Academy in the semifinals.

Several former Lady Tiger standouts have entered the coaching ranks. Odds are strong that Caldwell’s next volleyball head coach will come from that group.
