Riley Sword Helps Lady Maroons ‘Steal’ Win from Union County

Riley Sword came up with a steal with seven seconds to go in the game, one of her 8 thefts on the night, and then found Macy Wright for a layup, giving the Madisonville-North Hopkins Lady Maroons a 59-57 come-from-behind home court win over the Union County Bravettes. The game-winning score capped off a rally that saw the Lady Maroons come from eight points down with just 2:30 left to go in the game.

Behind a good start from Paige Steward the Bravettes took a 12-8 lead after the opening quarter.

The Lady Maroons then erupted for 21 points in the second quarter and looked to have things going their way with a 29-22 halftime lead.

Union County came out in the second half and clamped the defensive pressure on the Lady Maroons, limiting them to just two field goals as the Bravettes outscored Madisonville-North Hopkins 21 to 10 to go back in front 43-39 and setting the stage for the dramatic finish in the final minutes of the game.

Bryanne Johnson led the Lady Maroons with 16 points. Riley Sword, whose_ game-winning steal was her 8th of the night, added 13 points. Taylor Nelson knocked down two shots from behind the arc and ended up with 10 points.

Union County’s Paige Steward led all scorers in the game with 20 points. Bri Bell had 10 points. Aspen Davis finished with 7 points for the Bravettes.

Madisonville-North Hopkins (1-0) gets back to action Thursday night on the road at Hopkinsville.
