
The defending state champion Lyon County Lyons got off to a winning start to the season on Tuesday with an 80-62 victory over hosts Murray High.
The Lyons overcame struggles at the foul line to move to 1-0 behind 20-point nights from Nolan Coffman and Bray Kirk.
Cooper and Carson Collins combined for 11 first-quarter points to give the Lyons a 16-9 advantage.
Maddox Mitchell answered with a pair of three-pointers and eight points in the second for Murray, but the Lyons were able to extend the lead to 33-23 at the break behind five points from Coffman.
Murray outscored Lyon 19-17 in the third behind seven points from Harris Moore and six from Acey Striklin. After a quiet first half, Kirk began to heat up for the Lyons, scoring six points to match Coffman’s third-quarter output.
Kirk closed the show with 11 points in the final frame to help the Lyons outscore Murray by ten. Coffman added eight to finish with a game-high 23 points.
Kirk was next for the Lyons with 20 and was joined in double figures by Cooper Collins with 14 and Carson Collins with 11.
Moore led the way for the Tigers with 21, and Mitchell finished with 17.
Murray lost its second straight to start the season, while the Lyons will look to maintain a perfect start when they face Christian County on Thursday at the CFSB Center at Murray State University.
