St. Mary is expected to be one of the favorites to win the First Region All A Classic this season and the Vikings showed why on Monday with a 64-35 win over Trigg County in Paducah.
Luke Sims scored 11 points as part of a 24-2 start to the game as the Vikings were in control from the opening tip.
Lance Breckel’s consecutive 3-pointers early in the second quarter got Trigg County to within 18 points, but that was as close as they would get. 11 Trigg turnovers in the second eight minutes led to 10 St. Mary points and a 40-12 halftime lead.
St. Mary got up 22 more shots from the field as Trigg County struggled against St. Mary’s trapping defense, turning the ball over 26 times. The Vikings outscored Trigg 29-7 off turnovers.
Neither team was effective from the outside — four 3-pointers made each — but St. Mary outscored Trigg 38-18 in the paint.
Sims led the Vikings with 21 points and nine rebounds while 8th grader Griffin Mayes added 17 points.
Davaree Gude and Joshuan Bridges each scored nine points for Trigg County, who lost in the Wildcat coaching debut of Michael Fraliex. Trigg still leads the all-time series with St. Mary 8-7.
Trigg County returns to the floor Tuesday night with a road game at Fort Campbell.
