A strong defensive effort in the third quarter turned out to be the difference for the Graves County Lady Eagles Thursday night. Graves County broke open a close game by limiting the Lyon County Lady Lyons to just two field goals in the third as they pulled away for a 75-55 win in Mayfield.
The first half was a tight battle from the beginning. Piper Cotham and Courtney Collins combined for 13 points in the opening quarter as Lyon County took a 17-16 lead.
The game stayed close through the second quarter. Kinsey Burgess knocked down two shots from behind the 3-point line as Graves County pulled even at the half 32-32.
Coming out of the break, the Lady Eagles put the brakes on the Lyon County offense. The Lady Lyons mustered only a three from Courtney Collins, a basket from Trinity Taylor, and two free throws from Jenna Coursey as Graves County took control of the game and took a 53-49 lead heading into the final quarter.
Lyon County would lose Piper Cotham to fouls early in the fourth quarter and Graves County was able to pull on out to the 20-point win.
Lyon County got 14 points each from Piper Cotham and Courtney Collins. Trinity Taylor and Jenna Coursey added 9 points apiece.
Graves County’s Hannah Glisson led all scorers with 21 points. Kinsey Burgess was the other Lady Eagle to reach double figures with 13.
Lyon County (1-1) is back in action Friday night, taking on Hopkinsville in the Grind Session at Calloway County High School.
