Signee Martels Carter with Mark Stoops and Vince Marrow.
Kentucky football coach Mark Stoops is looking ahead.
“The year didn’t go the way we wanted it to,” Stoops said Wednesday. “I have been working around the clock to try to build the team for the future.”
Stoops added 20 players to his roster during the early national signing period on Wednesday. Stoops hopes to add one more player in the immediate future and said they “will be a big part of that as we move forward and a great foundation.”
The class features standout players from 12 states, including five from Kentucky. Among the instate signees include Boyle County star Montavin Quisenberry and Martels Carter Jr of Paducah.
“(Carter) is a guy I believe he can play, and play early,” Stoops said. “(I) just like his instincts, his demeanor (and) his athleticism. He is a guy that I have on my mind that could come in and play.”
Stoops also welcomed the addition of Quisenberry, one of the top 10 players in the state, and received the Paul Hornung Award.
“We’re excited about adding him along with all the other guys,” he said. “It’s a good group.”
Overall, Stoops added two quarterbacks, a wide receiver, four offensive and defensive linemen, five defensive backs, and four wide receivers.
“I think everybody looks at — we all know we want a better football team next year. I think there are players on here that will help us. How many? We will see.”
