A strong defensive effort in the first half from East Nashville Magnet set the tone against the Christian County Lady Colonels Saturday. Magnet limited the Lady Colonels to just 13 points in the first half on their way to a 57-41 win in the 4th annual KY-TN Challenge at Warren Central High School.
The Lady Colonels were right there with East Nashville Magnet over the first 8 minutes. Four different Christian County players scored in the opening quarter as East Nashville Magnet took a 13-8 lead. Then came the second quarter.
The Magnet defense limited Christian County to just one made shot from the field, that being a basket from Carlie Hobson. With the strong second quarter defensive effort, Magnet held a 31-13 lead at the half. East Nashville Magnet’s Madysen Elliott outscored the Lady Colonels on her own 14-4.
Christian County’s offense would find its stride after the break and the Lady Colonels would outscore East Nashville Magnet by two in the second half but it was not quite enough as the halftime hole was a bit too deep to dig out of in the final 16 minutes.
Led by NeVaeh Day and Genesis McGee, the Lady Colonels cut four points off the lead in the third quarter. The duo combined to score 10 of Christian County’s 14 points as the lead was cut to 41-27.
But that would be it as far as a comeback as East Nashville Magnet held things fairly steady in the fourth quarter and took the 16 point win.
Christian County was led by NeVaeh Day with 15 points and 6 rebounds. Anaysia Bagwell added 9 points for the Lady Colonels. DaNiya Bradley had 5 points and led Christian County on the glass with 12 rebounds.
Cold shooting was an issue for the Lady Colonels, who knocked down 14 of 53 from the field.
Madyson Elliott, of East Nashville Magnet, was named the ‘Player of the Game’ for her performance. She scored 24 points, 14 in the second quarter and 10 in the fourth. Talya McGee added 15 points for the winning team.
Christian County (1-1) will get back to action Tuesday as they travel to Madisonville for a matchup against the Lady Maroons.
