The Fort Campbell Lady Falcons finally got to open the 2024-2025 season Saturday. Ashlyn Virgin hit for 34 points as Fulton City picked up its first win of the season, getting past the Lady Falcons 63-55.
The game was somewhat of a free throw shooting contest. The two teams combined to be whistled for 59 fouls and shoot 69 free throws.
Both teams struggled to get their offense going in the opening quarter. Fulton City only made one field goal but knocked down 8 free throws as the Lady Bulldogs took a 10-6 lead after one.
The two teams ‘revved’ up the offense in the second quarter. Fort Campbell outscored Fulton City by one and cut the lead to 30-27 going into the half. The Lady Bulldogs did not help their own cause, missing 10 free throws in the quarter. A’mari Grimsley scored 10 in the quarter for Fort Campbell.
Ashlyn Virgin then took over the game for the Lady Bulldogs in the third. She scored 14 points in the quarter, one more than the Lady Falcons scored as a team as Fulton City pushed the lead out to 53-40 heading into the fourth.
The Lady Falcons would outscore Fulton City in the final quarter but the Lady Bulldog lead was a bit too much to overcome.
Fort Campbell was paced by A’Mari Grimsley with 21 points. Rosella Rajj added 17 points. Saniyah Bell and Kyrah Benson scored 5 points each.
Cold shooting was a problem for Fort Campbell. The Lady Falcons got off a bunch of shots from the field on the day. They put up 72 attempts but only connected on 22 of those.
In addition to Ashlyn Virgin’s 34 points for Fulton City, Desarae Johnson also hit double digits with 15 points.
Fort Campbell (0-1) goes back on the road Tuesday night to take on Caldwell County.
