Marshall County Smothers Lady Maroons for HoopFest Win

Marshall County’s high-octane offense was on display in its first two wins of the season, but in Saturday’s 70-38 win over Madisonville, the defense complimented the offense when the going was tough early.

Down 15-14 after one quarter, Marshall County held the Lady Maroons to single-digit scoring over the final three quarters and posted the 32-point win at the Marshall County Hoopfest. It was Madisonville’s first loss in three outings.

Skylar Waller provided the offense early for Marshall County, knocking down four 3-pointers in the first quarter and seven in the first half.

Madisonville hit 6-of-13 from the field in the opening quarter and controlled the glass in taking a 15-14 lead after the first eight minutes.

Riley Sword’s bucket with 6:50 left in the half gave Madisonville its largest lead of the half at 19-16.

Waller hit consecutive 3-pointers as part of a 10-0 run that gave the Lady Marshals its first lead since the final minute of the first quarter.

Madisonville made one field goal over the final 6:50 of the half as Marshall County pushed its advantage to 31-24 by halftime.

Things went from bad to worse for the Lady Maroons in the third quarter as Marshall County hit 6-of-12 shots while Madisonville missed 14 of 16 and fell into a 19-point hole.

Waller, who has signed to play at Florida’s Southeastern University, hit 7-of-9 shots behind the arc and finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Laken Schroader and Addi Wall each scored 10 points for a balanced Lady Marshals attack that saw nine players score and shoot 52% from the field.

Riley Sword led the Lady Maroons with 16 points, with Bryanne Johnson adding eight points. Macy Wright chipped in with nine rebounds and three assists.

Madisonville was able to score 18 points off 16 Marshall County turnovers but was outrebounded 44-23 and shot just 17% in the second half.

Saturday’s game at the Hoopfest was the first between the schools in five years. Madisonville won that 2019 matchup 61-49.

Madisonville will host Christian County on Tuesday and open district play with a Thursday home tilt with Hopkins County Central.

Marshall County eclipsed 80 points in its first two wins of the season over Massac County, Ill. and Ballard Memorial. They will travel to McCracken County on Thursday.
