Trigg County won a basketball game for the first time this year in a manner that did not involve overtime or a last-second shot.

The Wildcats defeated Stewart County, Tenn. 53-45 on Thursday at Wildcat Gym.

While there were no late-game heroics in this one, the Wildcats did continue a formula of winning a game in which they trailed at halftime. The Wildcats improved to 4-1 and have trailed at intermission in all five games.

Trigg County got out to an early eight-point lead in the first quarter only to see Stewart County battle back and take a 23-22 lead midway through the second quarter on a Jacob Finnch three-pointer.

The Rebels led 29-28 at halftime and extended its lead to 30-28 early in the third quarter before Landon Swann hit back-to-back three-pointers to give Trigg County a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Those were the only points scored by Trigg County in the third quarter — a quarter that was pretty much a rock fight between the two teams. Trigg County was two of nine from the field while Stewart County was one of nine.

Trigg County built its lead to double digits in the fourth quarter hitting six of seven from the field and five of eight at the free throw line while Stewart County hit just four of 16 from the field.

Swann led the Wildcats in scoring with 15 points. He also pulled down eight rebounds.

Davaree Gude had 11 points and 18 rebounds and Lance Breckel and Caleb Fogle each had nine points.

Trigg County shot 41% from both the field and the free-throw line as the charity stripe continues to be an issue for the Wildcats who hit just 9 of 22.

Stewart County got 17 points and 13 rebounds from Brayden Threat and Hargis Cherry came off the bench to score eight for the Rebels who dropped to 1-7.

Trigg County will travel to Mortons Gap on Friday to play Hopkins County Central in a matchup featuring coaches who coached at the other school last year.

Michael Fraliex stepped down as Storm head coach earlier this season after five years at the school. That allowed Mason Burgett to leave Trigg County and return home to his alma mater and coach Hopkins Central. Fraliex then took the Trigg job several weeks later.
