Defense Carries Mayfield Past Todd County Central

Less than 24 hours after picking up their first win of the season, the Todd County Central Rebels ran into a buzzsaw in the form of the Mayfield Cardinals. The Rebels were limited to 10 points or fewer in all four quarters Saturday morning as they tell 65-29 in the semifinals of the United Southern Bank ‘Battle at the Border.’

The Cardinals were honed in from outside the 3-point line to open the game, knocking down four 3-pointers in the first quarter on the way to a 24-8 lead.

The Rebels slowed the Cardinals’ offense down some in the second quarter. Still, Mayfield was able to nudge the lead out to 35-18 at the half.

The Cardinals then came out and put the game away in the third quarter. Mayfield knocked down three more shots from behind the arc as the lead grew to 52-27.

With the clock in running mode, the final quarter was a quick one. The Mayfield defense finished out strong, allowing the Rebels just one field goal over the final eight minutes of the game.

Jayden Glass was the only Rebel to reach double figures with 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Connor Holder also had a couple of threes and ended up with 9 points.

Mayfield was led by Owen Byrd with 15 points. Owen Webb had 12 and Malik Kirby ended up with 9 points.

Todd County Central dropped to 1-7 with the loss while Mayfield improved to 5-1.
