It came down to the final moments of the game Saturday between Madisonville-North Hopkins and Middleton. But in the end, Middleton knocked down 6 of 6 free throws in the final quarter to help seal a 63-57 win over the Lady Maroons in The Hardwood Classic at Calloway County High School.
The Lady Maroons got hot starts from Riley Sword and Macy Wright as they took a 24-20 first quarter lead. Sword had 12 points and Wright 8 in the first 8 minutes of the game.
Middleton’s defense allowed Madisonville-North Hopkins just three made field goals in the second quarter as the Tennessee team battled back to take a 35-31 halftime lead.
SaNya Carney, Taylor Nelson, and Bryanne Johnson sparked the Lady Maroons in the third quarter and helped to bring the game to a 49-49 tie going into the fourth.
Both teams made four field goals over the final eight minutes, but the 6 for 6 shooting at the line turned out to be the difference in the Middleton win.
Riley Sword led the Lady Maroons with 14 points, all coming in the first half. She also had 6 assists and six steals. Macy Wright also finished with 14 points, 10 of them in the first half. SaNya Carney hit double figures with 12. Taylor Nelson chipped in with 7.
Madisonville-North Hopkins (5-4) will be back in action Friday at the Murray Bank Lady Tiger Classic against Butler County.
