After a disappointing loss two days earlier, Trigg County coach Michael Fraliex was looking to see how his team responded Saturday at Mayfield.

The first-year skipper liked what he saw.

The Wildcats fell to the Cardinals 58-55, getting up two shots to tie the game inside the final 20 seconds.

The defensive effort was a far cry from Thursday’s 77-72 loss to Community Christian which saw the Warriors shoot nearly 50% from the field and hit 12 three-pointers.

The Wildcats trailed by 13 points early in the third quarter but used a 16-6 run to close the frame and pull to within 49-46 thanks to 7-of-11 shooting in the period.

Trigg would get to within 57-55 with 20 seconds left on a Davaree Gude bucket. After a foul and Mayfield free throw, Trigg missed a shot in the paint with seven seconds left.

Mayfield missed a pair of free throws and Trigg got a good look at a 3-pointer ahead of the horn but the shot missed.

It looked early as if Saturday would be a repeat of Thursday as Mayfield hit 8-of-16 behind the arc in the first half and shot 50% from the field in building a 38-28 lead at intermission.

However, Trigg limited Mayfield to 20 second half points on 8-of-24, including 0-of-8 behind the arc.

The Wildcats shot 55% from the field during their second half comeback but were 4-of-14 at the free throw line. Mayfield also scored 20 points off 19 Trigg turnovers.

Owen Webb scored 13 points for the Cardinals, who improved to 11-1. Gray Robbins gave the Cardinals a boost off the bench with 13 points.

Slaton Carter led the Wildcats with 15 points and seven rebounds. Landon Swann added 12 points and seven rebounds as the Wildcats held a 29-18 advantage on the glass.

The game was Trigg County’s first at Mayfield since 1961. Mayfield leads the all-time series with Trigg 7-4.

It was also the first time Mayfield’s Payton Croft coached against his former school. Croft won 85 games and three district titles with the Wildcats from 2013-19. Before Saturday’s game, he was honored for his 100th win as Mayfield coach.

Trigg County (5-8) is scheduled to host Union County on Tuesday.
