In a Saturday afternoon battle of teams looking to contend in the 2nd Region, it was the Christian County Lady Colonels picking up the win on the road. Christian County used a big blitz in the first quarter to get control of the game and then turned back a late 4th quarter charge from the Lyon County Lady Lyons to take the 81-75 win.

Courtney Collins and Lilly Perry hit early threes to put the Lady Lyons up 6-2. Collins’ second three of the game a few minutes later extended the lead to 11-6. Then, a problem popped up for the Lady Lyons and that problem was the foul bug and it started to bite often.

The Lady Lyons reached 5 fouls midway through the first quarter with Lilly Perry and Trinity Taylor spending some time on the bench with two fouls each. With the two starters on the bench, Christian County’s wall-to-wall defensive pressure began to cause all kinds of havoc in the form of Lyon County turnovers.

With Lazarie Daniel, NeVaeh Day, and Anaysia Bagwell leading the way, the Lady Colonels went on a massive 27-3 run. Lyon County went from up 11-6 to down 33-14 in what seemed like the blink of an eye.

The Lady Lyons got three free throws and a three from Courtney Collins to temporarily stem the tide as the quarter ended with the Lady Colonels up 35-20. Day and Bagwell combined for 23 first quarter points for Christian County.

Christian County scored five quick points to open the second quarter and push the lead out to 20 and it looked as if Lyon County might be in deep early trouble.

But the Lady Lyons came roaring back. Two 3-pointers from Trinity Taylor and a 3-point play from Jenna Coursey cut the lead to 11 at 40-29 in less than a minute. Getting a strong effort from Taylor and Coursey in the quarter, Lyon County would pull to within 47-39 on a steal and layup from Piper Cotham, prompting a timeout from Coach Kiki Radford for the Lady Colonels.

Christian County closed out the remainder of the half on a 10-3 run to take a 57-42 lead into the break.

The big three for Christian County, Anaysia Bagwell, NeVaeh Day, and Lazarie Daniel combined to score 47 points in the first half of play.

Lyon County’s outside shooting kept them within shouting distance in the first half. The Lady Lyons hit seven shots from behind the arc over the first 16 minutes, getting three each from Courtney Collins and Trinity Taylor, and one from Lilly Perry.

The blistering tempo of the first half geared down some as the second half got rolling. Lyon County would get as close as eight points at 62-54 on a Courtney Collins 3-pointer.

Sparked by Lazarie Daniel, Christian County responded to the move by Lyon County with a 7-0 run to finish out the third and take a 69-54 lead into the final eight minutes of the game.

As the fourth quarter got underway, the Lady Lyons would try to get a run going but the Lady Colonels had an answer in the form of NeVaeh Day. Lyon County would make a furious late charge and get within 81-75 inside the final minute. Christian County missed a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left but the Lady Colonels got the rebound to seal the win.

NeVaeh Day led the Lady Colonels in the win with 23 points. Anaysia Bagwell and Lazarie Daniel were right behind Day with 22 points and 21 points respectively. Daniel also added 11 rebounds.

For the Lady Lyons, Courtney Collins hit for 21 points, including five made 3-pointers. Piper Cotham and Jenna Coursey ended up with 17 points each. Trinity Taylor made four threes and had 14 points.

Big factors in the game were turnovers for the Lady Lyons and the control of the boards for Christian County.

Christian County moves to 12-8 with the win. The Lady Colonels will be back in action Friday when they host the Hopkinsville Lady Tigers.

Lyon County drops to 15-3 on the season with the loss.
