For the first half of the opening quarter, Mayfield and Trigg County played an up-and-down, 3-point shooting style that put them both on a high-scoring pace.
Only the Cardinals were able to sustain their success as they ran away from the Wildcats 82-51 on Tuesday at Wildcat Gym.
Both teams made three 3-pointers in the first three minutes that saw the game tied at 11.
However, Trigg followed with five missed shots and three turnovers while Mayfield used an 8-0 run to build a 19-11 lead.
The Cardinals’ lead teetered on double digits into the second quarter until a 13-3 run to end the half seemingly decided the contest.

Mayfield was tenacious on the glass, grabbing 15 offensive rebounds that turned into 16 second-chance points. The Cardinals shot 48% (34/71) from the field but rebounded 44% of their own missed shots.
The rebound difference, along with 22 Trigg turnovers that led to 20 Mayfield points, saw the Cardinals get up 35 more shots than Trigg. The Wildcats shot 44% from the field but managed just 36 shots in 32 minutes.
Mayfield built a 37-point lead in the fourth quarter that triggered a running clock against the Wildcats for the second straight game.
Caleb Fogle knocked down three 3-pointers and led the Wildcats with 16 points. Landon Swann added nine points and Davaree Gude added seven points.

Mayfield, who was coming off a loss to Ballard Memorial in the 1st Region All A Classic championship game over the weekend, saw six players score in double figures. Owen Webb hit four of Mayfield’s nine 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.
It was Mayfield’s first trip to Wildcat Gym since 1962 when Trigg got double-doubles from Buddy Sivills and John Graham to beat the Cardinals 75-62.
It was also Payton Croft’s first trip back to coach at Wildcat Gym in six years. The Mayfield coach won 85 games and three district championships before leaving Trigg for Mayfield.
Trigg County (6-10) will try and snap a skid that has seen them drop seven of its last eight games as they host Livington Central on Friday.
