Sophomore gymnast Sharon Lee of Round Rock, Texas, had quite the collegiate debut when No. 8 Kentucky opened its home season with an upset win over No. 3 Alabama.
Lee scored a 9.9 on beam in her first meet to help spark the win over Alabama and create an emotional buzz.
“As I went through and reviewed the meet and looked at the scores, that was one of the standouts and stories of the meet,” Kentucky coach Tim Garrison said on WLAP Sunday Morning Sports Talk. “She was a young lady who patiently waited her time.
“When she got her opportunity to compete, she went out in the third spot in a meet that was in question and scored a 9.9. That was a special moment. I don’t think there was a dry eye on our team. She’s a special young lady and took advantage of her chance.”
Teammate Jillian Procasky, a senior from Austin, Texas, scored a 9.85 in beam — UK’s fourth best score on beam against Alabama.
“She (Procasky) is getting married in September and her maid of honor is Sharon,” Garrison said. “So in the rotation the maid of honor, Sharon, was third and fourth was the bride. That just made the story even better.”
Kentucky is at Missouri Sunday in its next meet before returning home Jan. 31 to host Auburn.
