The Madisonville-North Hopkins girls put together one of their best efforts of the season to upend Lyon County 67-63 Thursday night at Maroon Gym.

A 15-0 run in the second quarter enabled the Lady Maroons to get the lead. Madisonville then fought off a Lady Lyon comeback bid late to hold on for the win.

Lyon (15-5) got off to a good start, leading 16-13 after one quarter and extending the margin to seven points at 20-13 early in the second period.

However, Madisonville (10-7) countered with its big run to take the lead. The Lady Maroons got to halftime with a 32-26 advantage.

Madisonville scored the first six points of the second half to extend its lead to 12 points at 38-26 following a layup by Bryanne Johnson less than 2 minutes into the third quarter.

Lyon got back within 42-37, but a 3-pointer just ahead of the horn by Taylor Nelson sent Madisonville to the final frame with a 47-39 edge.

The Lady Maroons continued to add to that margin, taking their biggest lead of the night at 58-43 when Macy Wright scored in the lane off a pass from Nelson with 3:29 left in the contest.

The Lady Lyons tried to battle back behind Piper Cotham. The Lyon guard had a three-point play, then nailed two 3-pointers to get her team as close as 62-58 with still 1:13 remaining.

But Sadie Kirk scored on a runout for Madisonville, then Riley Sword made two free throw to make it a 66-58 game with 48 seconds left.

Trinity Taylor hit a 3 to get Lyon within 67-63, but only 6 seconds remained and Madisonville held on.

The Lady Maroons had remarkably balanced scoring with Wright and Sword each netting 13 points while Nelson and Johnson each had 12. SaNya Carney had nine points.

Cotham had 21 for Lyon to lead all scorers. Taylor added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Jenna Coursey scored 10 points and Courtney Collins added nine.

The Lady Maroons will play at home again on Monday when they host 7th District foe Caldwell County.

The Lady Lyons will be in 5th District action on Tuesday when they visit Livingston Central.
