The Lyon County Lyons will be looking to do something they have never done before against a team they have never faced before. Lyon County and Danville Christian will take to the court at the Owensboro Sportscenter Sunday afternoon in the All A Classic state championship game.
Lyon County is making its first appearance in the title game in its 7th trip to the All A Classic. Danville Christian is also in the title game for the first time. The Warriors, champions out of the 12th Region, are in the All A state tournament for the third time in the past four seasons.
Lyon County’s previous best run was last year when the Lyons reached the semifinals before losing to Newport. DCA was also knocked out by Newport in 2024, one round earlier in the quarterfinals.
The Warriors ented the title game with a record of 16-2 and having won nine straight. Their two losses have been to Ashland Blazer and Woodford County.
Lyon County is now 14-4 and is also on a nine-game winning streak since losing 4 straight during a difficult holiday season schedule.
The story for Danville Christian in the tournament has been their defense. The Warriors gave up just 23 points to Elliott County and just 29 points to both Walton-Verona and Hazard. By comparison, Lyon County’s 58 points in the win over Owensboro Catholic is their lowest point output of the season.
DCA is led by Geu Leek Ateny, who was averaging 17.7 points per game coming into the tournament. Titus Boyd averages 13.4 points a game and Lual Ayiei is third on the scoring list at 11.2.
Ateny, a junior, averages 9.6 rebounds a game while Ayiei pulls down 6.6 rebounds.
Don’t expect to see many threes from the Warriors. DCA is just 53 of 177 for the season behind the arc entering the All A Classic. Lyon County, on the other hand, entered this week 90 of 306 on three-pointers, and that does not include the Graves County game or any of the three games in Owensboro so far.
This game figures to be a test of wills. DCA averages 56.6 points and gives up just 42.2. The Lyons average 76.8 points per contest and give up 61.3. Lyon County did show in the win over Owensboro Catholic that they can play grind it out if they need to.
Tipoff time is Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
