Mayfield converted 31 Trigg County turnovers into 36 points and handed the Lady Wildcats a 51-36 loss on Monday at Wildcat Gym.
Mayfield had control of the game throughout but didn’t deliver the knockout punch until the third quarter when they extended an 11-point advantage to 19 by the end of the frame.
The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 20-7 lead and capitalized on 11 first quarter turnovers by the Lady Wildcats.
Despite the mistakes, the Lady Wildcats shot just well enough to stay within striking distance, hitting 7-of-12 shots. But the shot discrepancy for the game – 45 shots for Mayfield to Trigg’s 28 – was too much for the Lady Wildcats to overcome.
Mayfield would build a lead as large as 22 points in the fourth quarter before Trigg scored the final seven points.
Keely Henson hit three 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and nine steals. Junior guard Lay Mayes, the daughter of former Trigg County All-State guard Anthony Mayes, scored 16 points and tallied seven steals in front of a group of her Trigg County family members and friends.
Veyda Grinols produced another double-double for Trigg County with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Reese Bush added 10 points and five boards.
Mayfield (13-5) improved to 5-0 all-time against Trigg County. The game was their first in Cadiz since 2012.
Trigg County (4-13) will play at Caldwell County on Friday. The boys/girls doubleheader will be played at the Butler Gym in downtown Princeton.
