The Trigg County High School Athletic Hall of Fame inducted its 13th class on Saturday. This year’s class includes Benji Glunt (football), Ray Torian (basketball/baseball), Tom Patterson (archery coach), and the 1999 girls’ region championship golf team.
After several near misses, Trigg County won the Region I girls’ golf championship in 1999 which remains the only region golf title – boys or girls – in school history.
Trigg County defeated Heath by 10 shots to claim the title at the Mayfield Country Club. Katie Bowers shot a round of 84 to finish in third place with Jena Lancaster finishing in fourth place with an 86, and Ashley Hensley joining them in the top 10 with a round of 87.
Margaret Martin shot a 91 and Ashley Flood added a 114 as Trigg’s balance on their scorecard helped them to the team title.
Cayce Grace was Trigg’s sixth golfer throughout the season which saw them set a nine-hole school record score of 164 earlier that season.
The region championship was the culmination of three previous near misses at the region level.
In 1998, Trigg County finished in third place, missing out on a state qualification by one position as Hensley (6th place) and Martin (8th place) qualified for the state tourney as individuals.
In 1997, Trigg County finished in fourth place and missed qualifying for state by four shots as Hensley’s third-place individual finish qualified her for state.
In just four years, Trigg County’s team score at region improved by nearly 100 shots.
Steve Smith was the head coach of the Lady Wildcats’ golf team and was assisted by Bill Love, the golf pro at Boots Randolph Golf Course.
