If Tuesday’s basketball game were a trivia bowl, Webster County would have won that too as they had an answer for every run Trigg County made at them. The result was a 78-64 Trojan win over the Wildcats.

Webster County twice had six-point leads in the first half and trailed 22-18 early in the second quarter before using a 12-0 run to grab a 30-22 lead with 3:00 left.

Trigg County cut an 11-point deficit to eight midway through the third quarter, but Micah Austin hit consecutive 3-pointers to push the Trojan lead back to 55-38 with 1:55 remaining. His first three gave the senior guard 1,000 points for his Webster County career.

The deficit stayed between 14 and 20 points until the game’s final minute.

Trigg’s inability to finish in the paint proved costly. The Wildcats were just 16-of-36 inside the 3-point line with 17 misses in the paint.

On the other hand, Webster County made 19 of 33 shots inside the arc and 10 of 24 shots from 3-point range, shooting 51% overall.

Austin finished with 24 points, hitting 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Evan Davis added 21 points and seven rebounds for the Trojans.

Davaree Gude paced the Wildcats with 33 points and 12 rebounds. He was 13-of-19 from the field and had three of Trigg’s five offensive rebounds.

Landon Swann added 10 points for the Wildcats, who have dropped a season-high eight games. In those eight games, Trigg County has given up 77 points or more in seven of the losses. In every loss, Trigg’s opponent has scored a point per possession.

On Tuesday, Webster County scored 1.21 points per possession – equaling Caldwell County’s 84-31 win on Jan. 31 for the most during the skid. Trigg has topped one point per possession twice in the past eight games.

Webster was the seventh team to shoot 50 percent or better against the Wildcats this season.

The win was Webster County’s seventh straight over Trigg dating back to the Wildcats’ last win in 2015. Webster leads the all-time series 28-11.

Webster County will host winless Crittenden County on Friday. Trigg County will host Lyon County on Saturday night in a December makeup game.
