Tie-breakers will be needed to decide the first-round matchups of the girls’ 5th District basketball tournament that begins a week from Monday.
Livingston Central used a 15-0 second quarter run to grab control of the contest and defeat Trigg County 65-31 in Smithland. Both teams end district play tied for third place with 1-5 records. Trigg County beat Livingston 47-36 on January 24 in Cadiz.
Victoria Joiner scored 14 of her game-high 23 points in the first half as Livingston outscored Trigg 21-5 in the second quarter to build a 32-14 lead by halftime.
Any hope Trigg County had at mounting a comeback ended in the first few minutes as Joiner sparked a 12-2 run with seven points.
In addition to her 23 points, Joiner pulled down 11 rebounds and handed out six assists as the Lady Cardinals got a balanced score sheet from its starters.
Maggie Downey and Emersyn Ramage each scored nine points. Downey’s second 3-pointer of the game in the second quarter saw the senior guard pass 1,000 points for her career.
Taylor Leahy and Brooklyn Collins each scored eight points for the Lady Cardinals, who knocked down 11 three-pointers and shot 49% from the field.
One night after hitting eight 3-pointers in a 39-point win over Dawson Springs, the Lady Wildcats were just 1 of 14 from the outside.
Veyda Grinols scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds – her 10th double-double of the season. Reese Bush added 10 points and seven rebounds for the Lady Wildcats.
Trigg County did most of its damage on the glass. 15 of their 33 rebounds came on the offensive glass and led to 19 second-chance points.
However, their season-long turnover issue reared its ugly head again as 21 Lady Wildcats turnovers led to 31 Livingston points. The Lady Cardinals didn’t commit a turnover until late in the third quarter and finished with four for the game.
Livingston Central leads the all-time series with Trigg County 70-49 and has won the last two games in Smithland by a total of 74 points.
Pairings for the 5th District Tournament will be determined on Wednesday. In addition to the Trigg/Livingston tie-breaker, Lyon County and Crittenden County each finished with identical 5-1 district marks with a tie-breaker needed to determine the top seed.
Trigg County will host Christian Fellowship for Senior Night on Monday.
