Christian County sent three wrestlers to the Girls’ Region 1 Wrestling Tournament and saw one reach the medal podium.
Kira Caldwell took fifth place in the 152-pound class. She defeated Caldwell County’s Anna Urbanowski by a 10-5 decision in the 5th-place match. In her other two matches, the Lady Colonel junior took her opponent into the third round before losing.
The top four wrestlers in each class advance to the state tournament in two weeks in Lexington but Caldwell will be an alternate if one of the four can’t take the mat.
7th grader Saoirse Brandenberg advanced to the third consolation round at 145 before falling to Henderson County’s Serenity Rivera.
7th grader Serenity Avalos was 0-2 with her first match a loss to the state’s top-ranked wrestler in the 114-pound class, Tanya Bacon of Union County.
Caldwell’s five points gave Christian County a 21st-place finish.
