If Trigg County basketball could flip the calendar from January straight to March, it would make its coaches a lot happier.

Michael Fraliex has become the third straight coach to endure the February blues for Trigg County following Monday’s 68-54 loss to Christian Fellowship at Wildcat Gym.

The loss is the tenth straight for Trigg County, who lost a second straight game to the Eagles from the First Region.

Trigg County celebrated Senior Night, starting five of its six seniors. The momentum carried the Wildcats to a 9-0 lead on two 3-pointers from Caleb Fogle and a trey from David Cavanaugh.

As the seniors departed the floor and the regular starters entered for the Wildcats, the momentum was lost and the crowd was never back into the game as they were at the start.

Christian Fellowship responded with a 22-2 run as Trigg missed its next ten shots and turned the ball over five times.

Davaree Gude buried a 3-pointer ahead of the halftime horn to cut the CFS lead to 36-29.

The Eagles pushed its lead back to 13 points midway through the third quarter, but Trigg slowly chipped away and got to within 50-49 with 6:42 left. The Wildcats had three shots to take the lead on its next two possessions but couldn’t convert.

CFS answered with a 10-2 game-deciding run as Trigg managed just one field goal over the final 4:29.

The Eagles were able to limit the looks of Trigg’s outside shooters by pushing them further beyond the arc. Trigg was 8 of 30 from 3-point range, including 2 of 10 in the second half.

Not helping was Trigg County’s uncanny inability to hit shots in the paint. The Wildcats made just 11 of 26 shots inside the arc with 14 of the missed shots coming in the paint.

Give Christian Fellowship credit for out-hustling Trigg on the glass. The Eagles outrebounded Trigg 50-29 and scored 16 second-chance points off 16 offensive rebounds.

Christian Fellowship also had no trouble scoring once they reached the paint, hitting 28 of 49 inside the arc. They missed all 11 of their 3-point attempts.

Daxton Kite led Christian Fellowship with 28 points and seven rebounds. Elijah Grigg added 24 points and 19 rebounds – seven of his boards coming on the offensive end.

Gude led Trigg County with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while Fogle added 14 points.

The Wildcats’ 10-game losing streak is its longest since Trigg lost the final 12 games of the 1992-93 season and continues a recent trend of February swoons.

Mason Burgett’s Trigg teams were 7-12 in February in his two seasons as head coach. His father Chad was 9-13 in February leading up to the district tournament in three seasons as coach, and Payton Croft was 3-12 in February in his final three seasons on the Trigg bench.

If there is good news for Trigg, it’s the fact they are hosting the 5th District Tournament next week at Wildcat Gym. Trigg will play Livingston Central next Tuesday in the semifinals.
