Kentucky will have a spring football game — or at least some sort of outing.
Kentucky coach Mark Stoops confirmed Tuesday that Kentucky will do “something” to end spring practice but it likely will not be the traditional Blue-White Game.
The Cats start practice on March 10 and are scheduled to conclude their 15 practices on April 12.
Because of the increased activity in the transfer portal, some schools have decided not to have spring games. Those schools include Texas and Missouri from the Southeastern Conference.
Some coaches don’t want to let rivals scout their players before the transfer portal opens again in April. Stoops does not have that fear even though he sounded like Tuesday he would change UK’s spring game format.
“I want to do something. It’s a little early (to know for sure). I think we’re in really good shape. Healthy right now,” Stoops said. “I want to open it up and show you guys (in the media) and show the fans and make sure you guys and the fans get access.
“Whether it’s a practice or spring game. However, we format it. I want to do something.”
However, you might have to be at Kroger Field to see the game whether it is simply UK’s offense vs. defense rather than a true split squad type of game. Kentucky’s game last spring did not include full tackling to prevent injuries but fans did get to see the No. 1 offense go against the No. 1 defense.
“I don’t think we’ll put it on TV,” Stoops said. “We haven’t talked about it or anything but I want to open it up to you and to our fans. Even if it’s a practice, at least a lot of times, you can see more.”
