After getting a ‘grand’ performance from senior Kanyon Johnson, the Madisonville-North Hopkins Maroons are heading back to the regional semifinals for the second year in a row and for the 6th time in the past seven seasons. Johnson scored 24 points as the Maroons advanced past the Livingston Central Cardinals 80-63 Wednesday night.
Things got off to an inauspicious start for the Livingston Central as big man Logan Wring picked up two quick fouls in the game. However, the Cardinals got solid starts from Mason Hargrove and Bryson Walker as Livingston took early 5-point leads at 5–0 and 10-5.
Madisonville struggled early to get in the flow of things, dealing with early turnover issues and not being able to get shots to fall. However, the Maroons finished the opening quarter strong, led by the outside shooting of Landen Smith.
The Maroons got a basket from Ryan Bryant and then back-to-back threes from Smith to take a 13-12 lead after one.
Smith then buried another three to open the second quarter, completing an 11-0 run to put Madisonville up 16-12.
Livingston Central temporarily slowed the Maroon momentum with a basket from Avery Zaim to cut the lead to 16-14. But, ole Uncle Mo was already moving his seat over to the Madisonville-North Hopkins sideline, and the Cardinals could not seem to find a way to stop the move.
With Landen Smith and Kanyon Johnson heating up from the outside, the Maroons went on a 12-4 run to push the lead out to double figures at 28-18. Madisonville would ease the lead on out to 13 points at the half, taking a 33-20 lead into the locker room at the half.
Landen Smith was borderline unstoppable for Madisonville in the first 16 minutes, knocking down four threes and scoring 14 points in the half. Kanyon Johnson had 11 at the break, all of them coming in the second quarter.
A big story in the first half was the Maroons’ defense on Logan Wring. Madisonville held the Cardinals’ leading scorer to just two points on a pair of first half free throws.
Wring finally got his first field goal of the night to open the second half, cutting the margin to 33-22, but Kanyon Johnson scored four quick points to push the lead out to 37-22 early in the third. And Johnson just kept on rolling from there. Whether he knocking down jumpers, attacking the rim, or dishing off to teammates, the Cardinals just could not find a way to contain the Maroon senior.
Livingston Central battled to try and stay in the game over the rest of the third. Logan Wring, who did not have a field goal in the first half, started finding his way to the basket and put up 8 points in the quarter. Still, it was Madisonville-North Hopkins with a 51-33 lead when the quarter ended.
The Maroons extended the lead to as many as 21 early in the final quarter. With the lead at 19 points midway through the quarter, Madisonville started getting some reserves into the game. Led by Logan Wring, who got sizzling hot in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals tried to make one last run to get back in the game.
The Cardinals got within 12 points on a Wring 3-pointer with just over three minutes to go at 63-51. The two teams traded three-pointers to make it 66-54 with still 2:46 to go in the game. But 12 points would be as close as the Cardinals could get as Madisonville held on for the 17-point win.
In addition to Kanyon Johnson’s 24 points, which all came after the first quarter, Ryan Bryant finished with 17 points. Landen Smith added 14 points, all of them coming in the first half. Jeremiah Sharp just missed a double figures game with 9 points.
Logan Wring, after being held to just two points in the opening half, ended his night with 29 points. Bryson Walker was the only other Cardinal in double figures with 12. Avery Zaim came off the bench to score 8 points for Livingston.
Both teams shot over 50 percent for the night, with Madisonville hitting 59.3 percent and the Cardinals shooting 51.1 percent.
The Maroons move to 16-12 with the win, which was their third straight, and head on to next Tuesday night’s regional semifinals.
Livingston Central sees its season come to an end at 9-21.
