Blazer Relay Team Wins Class 1A Indoor State Title

University Heights Academy brought home a state indoor track and field championship for the second straight year on Wednesday as the 1600-meter relay team coasted to a four-second win.

Griffin McCoy, Harlow Hampton, Tobias Duncan, and Ryan Luckey knocked 15 seconds off their previous best with a time of 3:36.59. Hampton grabbed the lead on the second leg, and the Blazers held its lead for the rest of the way.

It was one of three podium finishes for UHA relay teams at the Norton Sports and Learning Center in Louisville.

The 800-meter relay team of McCoy, Hampton, Luckey, and Clayton Lester Luckey finished second in 1:33.79.

The 3200-meter relay team began the day with a second-place finish as Zech Davis, Cole Glover, Duncan, and Luckey ran an 8:50.57.

Griffin McCoy came in second place in the 200-meter dash. His time of 22.32 seconds was .17 behind the winner – Tyler Fryman of Beechwood.

McCoy was sixth in the 55-meter dash in 6.69 seconds – a race that saw the top seven finish within .13 seconds.

Tobias Duncan reached the medal podium in the 800-meter run, finishing in fifth place in 2:07.30.

Harlow Hampton was 14th in the 200-meter dash in 24.43 seconds.

Logan Miller got a medal in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing seventh in 8.30 seconds. He was also 16th in the 400 meters in 57.05 seconds.

Jude Finch finished 20th in the 3200 meters in 11:56.88.

UHA finished in sixth place with 43 points as 13 points separated the top six teams. Green County won the state title with 56 points, followed by Collegiate (55), Williamsburg (50), Bishop Brossart (47), and Beechwood (46).

The outdoor track and field season begins in less than two weeks.
