A matchup between the defending 2nd Region baseball champions and the team that many consider the be the favorite for the title in 2025 turned out to be well worth the price of admission on the opening night of the new season Monday. Korben Lucas drove in two runs with a one-out single in the top of the 5th inning as the Lyon County Lyons rallied past the Hopkinsville Tigers to take a 2-1 win.

Lucas’ hit came after singles from Colton Prow and Hudson Phillips and then a walk to Eli Baker.

Hopkinsville had taken the lead in the game back in the bottom of the second inning. A Lyon County error opened the door in the inning and the Tigers took advantage by loading the bases and then scoring on a ground out from Griffin Meacham to take a 1-0 lead. That lead would hold up until the Lyon County comeback in the top of the fifth.

Both starting pitchers were on their games from the beginning. Lyon County’s Eli Baker went five innings to get the win. He allowed one run on three hits, struck out five and walked one. Hudson Phillips went two innings to get the save and gave up just one hit, striking out two and walking three.

Hopkinsville’s Andrew Mayes got tagged with the loss despite a great effort in the first game of the season. Mayes went six innings and gave up two runs on just four hits, striking out nine and walking one.

Korben Lucas finished 2-3 to lead the Lyons at the plate. Colton Prow and Hudson Phillips had the only other hits in the game for the Lyons.

Gavin Powell, Gavin Mitchell, Layton Lindsey, and Andrew Mayes had one hit each for the Tigers.
