Caldwell County’s girls held a 3-1 lead early at Henderson County on Thursday, but the defending state champions roared back.

A three-run fourth inning broke a 3-3 deadlock, and the Lady Colonels went on to post a 9-3 victory.

Mackenzie Burczyk was 3-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs to lead Henderson while Anna Kemp was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Maggie Grogan was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Kemp was also the winning pitcher, tossing the last four innings in relief of Burczyk.
Kemp allowed just one base hit and struck out five while walking five. Burczyk gave up three earned runs on four hits and four walks while striking out one over the first three innings for Henderson, which is 2-0.

For Caldwell (1-1), Grace Watson had a solo home run while Tink Clark had a double and an RBI. Alexis Wood singled and had an RBI.

Wood suffered the loss in the pitching circle. She allowed seven earned runs on eight hits, striking out four and walking three in 4.1 innings.

The Lady Tigers had taken the lead with two runs in the top of the third, but the Lady Colonels countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at 3-3.

Caldwell will look to bounce back on Friday with a trip to Union County.

The Lady Tigers will play at home for the first time on Monday against McCracken County.
