Hopkinsville made the most of four hits and solid pitching from Dylan Sweeney to beat Logan County 7-2 on Friday at Tiger Stadium.
Sweeney channeled his inner-Houdini at several points during the game to consistenty get out of tough spots and keep his team in the game until the Tiger bats mustered some offense.
The Tiger hurler and his defense stranded nine Logan County runners in five innings with seven of them in scoring position. The Cougars did poke across a run in the first inning when Noah Mosley led off with a single, reached third on an error, and scored.
With Logan County unable to get a timely hit in the first five innings, Hoptown got going in the fifth when Andrew Mayes led off with a double. Several batters later, Chase Fort and Gavin Powell drew back-to-back walks, and Gavin Mitchell plated a run when he was plunked with the bases loaded.
Logan County added a run in the sixth on an error, passed ball, and ground out.
Hoptown broke the game open in the sixth inning, extending a 3-2 lead on a two-run single by Sweeney. A two-run error later in the inning saw the Tigers increase its lead to 7-2.
Sweeney pitched five innings and struck out seven. He walked two and scattered six hits. The run he allowed was unearned. Powell pitched the final two innings to pick up the save.
Four Tigers registered hits with Mayes getting the lone extra base hit.
Drew McLellan and Mosley both doubled for Logan County as part of its eight-hit night.
Logan County dropped to 1-2 and will play at Warren East on Saturday.
