For just the second time in seven years, Trigg County will be represented at the KHSAA Boys State Archery Tournament.
Caleb Wadlington shot a 286 at Saturday’s Region 1 Archery Tournament at Trigg County’s Wildcat Gym to nab the third and final individual qualifying spot for next month’s state tourney.
The sophomore’s score was a new best, edging his 285 shot at last week’s NASP State Tournament in Louisville, good for a 69th-place finish out of 1,470 archers.
Marshall County’s Emmalee Downs competed with the guys in the Boys/Coed division and took first place with a score of 290, edging three other competitors thanks to having 22 shots in the center circle known as 10s.
Ethan Terrell shot a 280 to finish in 22nd place, while Junior Knott equaled the 280 and came in 23rd place.
Zachary Starcher (274) finished in 51st place followed by Kip Bergeron (268) in 71st place, Jayden Ennis (261) in 101st; Bodhi Buchman (251) in 123rd; John Thomas Fox (246) in 130th place; and Zander Smith (243) in 133rd place.
As a team, Trigg County placed ninth with 1,900 points. Marshall County won the region title with 1,993 points.
Unlike NASP tournaments where the top 12 scores of both and girls go toward a team score, the KHSAA takes the top seven scores of each gender to determine the boys’ and girls’ team and individual champion.
Wadlington is the first Trigg shooter to compete at the KHSAA State Tourney since Trevor Hoy in 2023 and only the second since 2018, which was also the last time Trigg qualified a full team for the state tourney.
The KHSAA State Archery Tournament will be on April 17 in Lexington.
